End textbook waste

ReUse Textbooks is a recycling business with the user in mind. We make it easy for students and schools to clear out clutter and give their unused textbooks a second life. We collect the textbooks, resell the ones with value, and return at least 75% of the proceeds to the donors, partner schools or educational charities. The goal is simple: keep valuable learning resources in use instead of letting them go to waste.

How it works

  • Schools and students collect textbooks.

  • ReUse picks them up and resells them.

  • ReUse provides at least 75% of the proceeds back to the schools, to an education charity, or a nonprofit or charity of their choice.

Why it matters

  • New textbooks are pricy; reusing makes learning more accessible for all students.

  • Schools need money: by reselling textbooks, they can create a new revenue stream to support other initiatives.

  • Discarded textbooks add to landfill waste. We divert them!

Who we are

  • ReUse Textbooks is a student-run company founded to ensure textbooks are accessible to all students, while reducing waste.

  • Based in Los Angeles, ReUse Textbooks currently serves the Southern California area.

  • Founded by Noah Sorgen, student at North Hollywood High School.

Founded by Noah Sorgen
ReUse Textbooks was founded in 2025 in Los Angeles by Noah Sorgen.
Inspired by a simple observation
The idea began after we noticed how often textbooks go unused. At home, textbooks would sit on shelves for years, and at school, books were simply dumped on shelves for disposal after classes ended.
A simple idea: textbooks should be reused
Many textbooks are designed to last for years, yet they're often used only once. ReUse works to keep those books in circulation longer.
Focused on access to education
The goal of ReUse is to help ensure that the cost of a textbook is never a barrier to learning.
Growing through partnerships
ReUse is currently building partnerships with schools and organizations to collect textbooks, reduce waste, and generate funding for education.

Textbooks improve learning
Textbooks provide structure, reference material, and reliable resources that support deeper learning.
Textbooks are expensive
For many students, buying textbooks is a major cost. A full year of textbooks can range from $400 to $1,200.
Schools often need additional funding
Many schools operate with limited budgets and welcome new ways to generate funds for educational resources.
Thousands of books go to waste every year
Many textbooks sit unused on shelves or end up in landfills, even though they could still be useful to other students.
Reuse solves multiple problems at once
By redistributing textbooks, ReUse helps reduce waste, support schools financially, and make learning materials more accessible.

Schools collect textbooks
Schools, students, or organizations set aside textbooks that are no longer being used instead of discarding them.
ReUse picks them up for free
ReUse Textbooks provides free pickup in Los Angeles, making it easy for schools and partners to clear out unused books.
Books are evaluated and listed
Each textbook is reviewed based on its condition, edition year, and past sales history to determine whether it can be resold.
Sellable books are resold online
Textbooks that have resale value are listed on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, allowing them to reach students looking for affordable materials.
Schools receive at least 75% of the proceeds
Partner schools receive at least half of the resale proceeds, which can go directly back to the school, to an education charity, or to a nonprofit of their choice.
Unsellable books are redistributed
Books that cannot be sold may still be donated to schools or organizations that need them.
Transparent reporting
Partner schools receive a report showing which books were listed and the percentage that sold.
